What Is Impossible Anyway? When Everything Was Invented Through Language

“Impossible” is often just a word: how language shapes our limits and why it’s worth questioning your own impossibilities – with practical steps.

In the previous article we talked about how to release your inner blocks to make your dreams come true. But what about the limits society sets for us? Our sense of what is impossible is often shaped by language – it forms our thoughts and beliefs. Let’s explore how these constructs came about and how you can overcome them to make the impossible possible.

1. Language shapes our reality

The words we use have immense power. They influence how we think about ourselves and our possibilities. If we constantly hear “That’s impossible” or “You can’t do that”, we internalise these thoughts and limit our own possibilities. Think about how often you use phrases like “I can’t” or “That will never work”. They limit not only you but also the people around you.

2. Where limits come from

Many of the limits we feel are socially constructed. They’re based on traditions, beliefs and experiences that aren’t necessarily universal. What seems impossible to one person can be perfectly doable for another. Think of people who have pushed the boundaries of what’s possible: newcomers to a sport, unconventional thinkers in technology or pioneers in art. They questioned limiting beliefs and found new ways to realise their visions.

3. New thinking through language

Language isn’t just a tool for communication – it’s also a means of change. When you start choosing your words consciously, you can also influence your thinking. Instead of “I can’t do this”, you could say “I’ll give it a try”. This small change can have a big impact on your confidence and motivation. You give yourself permission to grow and learn.

4. Allow yourself to dream the impossible

What if you allowed yourself to dream of the impossible? We often limit ourselves to what seems realistic and neglect our true wishes. Sit somewhere quiet, close your eyes and imagine what you would do if anything were possible. Let your imagination run free! These visions are the seeds of new possibilities and ideas.

5. Surround yourself with positive influences

To achieve the impossible, surround yourself with people who support you and believe in you. Positive relationships broaden your perspective and encourage you to think beyond limits. Look for mentors or like-minded people who have already achieved what seemed impossible and are willing to share their experience.

6. Create your own language of possibility

Create a language that encourages and motivates you. Find words that give you strength and support your dreams. Instead of “That’s too hard”, you could say: “It will be a challenge, but I’m ready to grow from it.” This personal language builds a positive mindset that helps you reach your goals.

7. Accept setbacks as part of the process

There will be setbacks on the way to your dreams. That’s normal. What counts is how you deal with them. Instead of getting discouraged, see them as learning opportunities. Every mistake brings you closer to your goals, as long as you’re willing to learn from it.

Remember

What seems impossible today could be completely normal tomorrow. You have the ability to shape your reality and cross the limits others have set for you. Say the impossible out loud, dream big and take the first step towards your dreams. The world is waiting for what you have to offer.
